Resilient Electric Grid

AMSC’s Resilient Electric Grid (REG) system transforms urban power network by delivering unmatched power efficiency, reliability, and cost savings with cutting-edge superconductor technology.

Overview

AMSC’s Resilient Electric Grid (REG) systems help our customers transform urban power networks to meet the needs of modern cities. Our REG system uses advanced high-temperature superconductor (HTS) technology with our proprietary Amperium® wire. Unlike copper wire, it transfers 200 times more power with zero losses due to resistance. The high capacity of a single superconductor cable delivers transmission-level power (over 100MW @15kV) from nearby substations, providing backup in case of a transmission or transformer failure.

AMSC’s REG system uses multiple fault current limiting cables so that substations can share assets while controlling fault currents without a transformer, connecting both large and small substations. REG systems are fault current limiting, which protects the system from fault currents and extends the life of existing equipment. Thanks to our state-of-the-art HTS, our customers enjoy a sense of security from our system’s added redundancies. If one substation experiences a failure, others can compensate by providing the necessary power via REG cables. This interconnected network enhances the power grid’s resilience and reliability.

AMSC’s REG system is a smart, cost-saving solution for our customers. Our system notably cuts major project costs like construction, real estate, and downtime. This is the perfect choice for urban areas with space constraints. Installed underground, it is scalable and customizable to easily fit any location. Overall, our system reduces cable rights of way and traditional substation footprints by 75%. With AMSC’s REG system, customers enjoy improved power quality, lower operational costs, and a reduced impact on public infrastructure.

AMSC’s REG system comes at a time when the need to upgrade and strengthen America’s electric power infrastructure has never been more urgent, especially in the face of growing electrical demand from extreme weather events and other aspects of the changing economy.  On August 31, AMSC and Commonwealth Edison (ComEd) Company unveiled a REG system on Chicago’s grid marking the first permanent installation of such technology in the US electric grid. This addition has transformed Chicago’s power grid, setting a new standard for other urban cities. By working with us, other cities can benefit from the enhanced resilience, reliability, and efficiency that the REG system offers, ensuring a robust and future-proof electric grid.

  • Are a cost-effective solution to grid modernization
  • Significantly improve network redundancy testing service and resiliency
  • Improve survivability of catastrophic system events
  • Increase reliability
  • Increase load-serving capacity of existing substations
  • Control fault currents
  • Act as a back-up for loss of transmission

Add flexibility to maintenance schedules

Applications

AMSC’s Resilient Electric Grid (REG) systems are a cost-effective approach, offering the follow applications:

  • Areas experiencing harsh weather conditions
  • Grid-modernization in small or large urban areas.
  • Unleashing Trapped Substation Capacity by interconnecting assets.
  • Faster Project Completion:  can be built much quicker compared to traditional methods.
  • Cost Reduction: Utilities can significantly reduce costs by using this solution.
  • Smaller Footprint: Cable rights of way and traditional substation footprints are reduced by about 75%.

Efficient Land Use: REG infrastructure requires less land, avoiding the lengthy process of finding, securing, and permitting new, larger sites for traditional substations.

Benefits

AMSC’s Resilient Electric Grid (REG) systems are ideal for urban and other space-constrained areas that are looking to future-proof their electric grid. Unlike traditional systems, our REG systems feature HTS technology that can transfer 200 times more power with zero losses due to resistance. REG systems are fault current limiting so that substations can share assets while controlling fault current levels. These small but mighty solutions also add redundancy to keep power grids running. Installed underground, they are scalable and customizable to easily fit any location. Overall, our system reduces cable rights of way and traditional substation footprints by 75%. With AMSC’s REG system, customers enjoy improved power quality, lower operational costs, and a reduced impact on public infrastructure.
